Handel’s great oratorio Messiah is associated worldwide with the Huddersfield Choral Society, and with their many recordings of this iconic work. For well over 150 years, it has been the centrepiece of a traditional Huddersfield Christmas.
The combined forces of Huddersfield Choral Society and the Orchestra of Opera North are directed for the first time in this performance by the outstanding young choral conductor Ellie Slorach; and the winner of the Dame Joan Sutherland Audience Prize at Cardiff Singer of the World 2019, the mezzo-soprano Katie Bray, makes her first appearance on the Town Hall stage. Don’t miss it.
The Choral has performed Messiah in Huddersfield every year without fail since 1864, uninterrupted by wars (though twice by fire alarms, after which the choir and audience resumed their places and just carried on where they left off)… with the only exception being the ban on live performance in 2020.
