Soprano and Opera North Chorister Claire Lees joins the company’s Chamber Ensemble, led by Oliver Rundell, for the climactic song, summing up Mahler’s tapestry of innocence and experience: “We lead angelic lives, yet have a merry time of it besides”.

The symphony will be accompanied by companion piece a true blue sky by Carol J Jones, commissioned by the Orchestra of Opera North. Mahler compared the symphony to the “uniform blue of the sky”, which served as the inspiration for this piece.
