Light Stories was born from Matthew Barley’s wish to tell a personal story in sound and image: the tale of a near-tragic event in his own life and his subsequent healing through music and therapy.

Inspired by the archetypal tale of Voyage and Return from The Seven Basic Plots by Christopher Booker, Light Stories divides Barley’s life story into 15 parts, giving each a sentence or two summary. He then matched pieces from his repertoire to these chapters, and where no existing work fit, wrote something new.

Barley mostly writes for multi-tracked cellos, but also uses synthesizer sounds, percussion, keyboards and a collection of Brazilian birdcall pipes.

Accompanying the music is video design by Yeast Culture, featuring dancer Mavin Khoo who brings a human element to the wide range of often nature-inspired imagery.
