Concert pianist Joanna MacGregor is one of the world’s most inventive and creative musicians. She is a regular solo artist at the BBC Proms and was invited by Sir John Eliot Gardner to perform the Goldberg Variations at the Royal Albert Hall in 2013, which was broadcast live.
Her programme for this concert is one of contrasts, opening with Beethoven’s 32 Variations which explore the full range, colour and techniques of the piano. Chopin’s rich and flamboyant Mazurkas leads into Ginastera’s vividly imagined Argentinian folkloric dances, Sofia Gubaidulina’s Chaconne and Fazil Say’s loss-infused fusion of Eastern and Western Styles Black Earth. The evening concludes with Beethoven’s magnificent middle-period Apassionata Sonata.
‘She is one of the most exciting and enterprising pianists of the moment.’
