Jasmine Myra + Emma Johnson
This event has passed.
Jasmine Myra and Emma Johnson are two of the most exciting saxophonists, composers and bandleaders to emerge from Leeds’ thriving jazz scene in recent years.
Jasmine’s music is rich and complex, yet unusually light, filled with melodies that feel gently familiar as though half remembered from a dream. In its euphoric sound and meticulous arrangements, you can hear influences from outside the word of jazz such as Bonobo and Olafur Arnalds.
Emma Johnson’s Gravy Boat will perform songs from Johnson’s new album Northern Flame, which draws inspiration from the lives of Northern women past and present, commissioned by Lancaster Jazz Festival. Alongside Johnson’s lyrical tenor saxophone, the band features drums, guitar, bass and piano. Together they perform Johnson’s spacious compositions with cool ease, leaving room for each to shine with characterful improvisations.
This concert is part of a new series celebrating the rising stars of Leeds’ music scene.
