Franz Schubert Winterreise
Winterreise was dubbed by Schubert ‘a cycle of spine-chilling Lieder.’ Indeed, when he first sang the opening 12 songs to some friends they were shocked by the starkness and almost minimalistic bareness of the writing.
Nearly 200 years on and the cycle has lost none of its power to engage and challenge, as Schubert portrays the protagonist’s agitated and disturbed emotional state. Joining Leeds Lieder Director, Joseph Middleton, Florian Boesch makes a welcome return to the Festival to perform the cycle that he has very much made his own. Reviewing recent performances, the Guardian described Boesch as ‘unquestionably superb’, Gramophone Magazine commenting that he is ‘inspired and quite unforgettable…remarkable and always affecting.’
