Encouraged by her idealistic if luckless father, a bright and imaginative young woman comes of age in a Brooklyn tenement during the early 1900s.
Peggy Ann Garner and James Dunn both won Oscars for their performances. With a memorable Christmas scene at its heart, this beautiful film was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.
Coinciding with Opera North’s Bernstein Double Bill, this screening of Elia Kazan’s directorial debut also revisits the post-war setting of Street Scene, our acclaimed 2020 production of Kurt Weill’s ‘Broadway opera’.
