In 14th-century Genoa, the former pirate Simon Boccanegra is elected head of the republic and becomes embroiled in a bitter feud with the aristocrat Jacopo Fiesco – but can reconciliation be found before it is too late? With music full of dark-hued grandeur and excitement, Opera North’s first ever performances of Simon Boccanegra follow our acclaimed concert stagings of large-scale Italian classics such as Turandot and Aida.
