Carnatic Pearls

Classical Music from Sri Lanka

Thursday 11 May 2023

This event has passed.

Join us on an enthralling journey through the temples of India all the way to the paddy fields of Sri Lanka, as Carnatic singer Yarlinie Thanabalasingam presents a performance of South Indian classical music.

Complementing Opera North’s summer staging of The Pearl Fishers, Yarlinie – who sang the role of Nambikkai (Hope) in Opera North and South Asian Arts-uk’s acclaimed Orpheus – returns for a more intimate performance of music rooted in the region in which Bizet set his opera.

Through a number of traditional compositions and improvisations on Carnatic raags, this unique concert, part of Opera North’s longstanding collaboration with SAA-uk, is a chance to experience the beauty of authentic South Asian culture, tradition and community, which form the ‘pearls’ that connect us to one another.

Yarlinie will be accompanied by Shri Somasundara Desikar on the mridangam, the two-sided drum that provides the rhythmic foundation of Carnatic music, and Shri Vijay Venkat – also from the Orpheus ensemble – on violin.

Presented in partnership with South Asian Arts-uk.

The Howard Assembly Room’s programme complementing – and critiquing – Opera North’s concert staging of Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers also includes a series of films by female and global majority directors, offering a contemporary counterbalance to the opera, and a space for critical thinking and discussion on the subjects it raises for us today.

The programme also features two events with members of the creative team in conversation.
