Like artists, composers and musicians use colours to create moods and feelings. Can you imagine what colours would go best with a piece of music? Could music inspire you to draw?

Try these different art activities whilst you listen to music…

Messy Dancing

You will need: newspaper, plain paper, paint, a container you can put your foot in, or a large paintbrush.

Put down the newspaper to protect your floor and lay plain paper on top. Have some paint in something you can dip your foot in or use a paintbrush!

Listen to ‘Bloom’, by Yazz Ahmed..

Paint the soles of your feet and get dancing on the plain paper!

Try different moves depending on what you can hear – slide, jump, twist. Try some different colours to make your picture even more fun! You could try this for several different styles of music…

Drawing in the Dark

You will need: paper, a pencil, something to use as a blindfold (for example, a tie or a scarf)

This one is simple, just draw what you hear!

However, there is a twist. Wear a blindfold so you cannot see what you are drawing. This means you will rely only what you hear to guide your pencil.

Try listening to ‘Rhapsody in Blue’, by George Gershwin:

When the music is finished, take a look at your drawing! Was it what you imagined?

Colour by music

You will need: paper, a pencil, colouring pencils

Using your pencil, draw your own planets (don’t colour them yet!)

Here is a tutorial by Draw Magic which might help you

It’s time to get your colouring pencils out. Some of the planets you have drawn are linked with a piece of music from The Planets by English composer Gustav Holst.

Listen to the music played by the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Proms in 2015 – what colour can you hear?

Choose the colour that you think best describes the music and colour each planet…

Mars | Venus | Mercury | Jupiter | Uranus | Neptune | Saturn

Don’t forget to colour the sun and the missing planet. Do you know which one is missing?

Now you have your own drawing of the planets, each represented musically through your listening and colouring!

We look forward to seeing what you have created, you can share your drawings with us on social media using #ONLittleSchool
