Opera North and South Asian Arts-uk come together for a special celebration of Winter Solstice and the Northern Lights in music and visuals.
Inspired by time spent in the Derbyshire Peak District, classically-trained Carnatic singer Supriya Nagarajan took her collaborator Duncan Chapman’s sunset field recordings as a starting point for their 2020 album Dusk Notes.
She performs tracks from the album, plus a brand-new collaboration with musicians from the Orchestra of Opera North, evoking the shifting skyscapes of the Northern Lights amid projections of a starlit night.
Supriya Nagarajan
Born in Bombay and trained in Carnatic South Indian classical vocal music from the age of five, Supriya Nagarajan is the founder of Manasamitra, the South Asian arts organisation based in Dewsbury. During Opera North’s Resonance programme this year, she worked with Sri Lankan-born poet and translator Shash Trevett to create new musical works based on ancient South Indian Tamil poetic metre.
