Shostakovich String Quartets 1, 2, 3
The Brodsky Quartet play the Complete Shostakovich Quartets
This event has passed.
A rare and exhilarating opportunity to hear all of Shostakovich’s incredible string quartets in one weekend. Or pace yourself and pick one or two that take your fancy. Tickets are available per concert, per day or for the weekend.
The first three quartets by Dmitri Shostakovich make for an amazing musical journey in themselves.
In the First Quartet (1938), originally entitled ‘Spring’ by the composer and written just after the birth of his son, one is confronted by music of the utmost simplicity.
The Second Quartet (1944) is a virtuosic tour de force; rules get tossed aside, movements are given unusual titles, and invention is apparent on a grand scale.
In the famous Third Quartet (1946), we find Shostakovich very much at home and comfortable in his own skin – no more need for reverence or showing off. From the very first note, he is engaging with the world in his own, unmistakable voice.
