Paris Is Burning is a 1990 American documentary film, directed by Jennie Livingston, that explores the underground subculture of ballroom dance and performance in the 1980s among New York City’s African American, Latino, gay, and transgender communities.

Part of LGBTQ+ History Month with Divina de Campo and HAR Late: Sisters with Transistors. Book 2 events 10% discount, 3 events 12.5% discount.

Considered to be a cult classic and an invaluable documentary of the end of the “Golden Age” of New York City drag balls, it’s a thoughtful exploration of race, class, gender, and sexuality in America.

The film will be introduced by Dr Andrew Moor, a Reader at Manchester Metropolitan University, whose research is focused on gay/lesbian/queer history. He has published extensively on British cinema – particularly the work of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger – and researches widely into aspects of LGBTQ+ film history.
