Arya Sitar Concerto
A symphonic sitar premiere
This event has passed.
An inspired intertwining of traditions
Two musical traditions meet in a world premiere and a Kirklees Concert Season first, at the centre of a spectacular programme taking its inspiration from beyond Western Europe.
THE MUSIC…
An unrelenting whirlwind, Erkin’s Köçekçe Suite fuses Turkish folk traditions with western symphonic music.
Composed and performed by the award-winning sitarist Jasdeep Singh Degun, Arya is an exciting new concerto. Simmering with grandeur and emotionally charged music, the melody moves from the sitar around the orchestra in gorgeous sweeps of sound.
Sibelius’ joyful Karelia and mysterious Swan of Tuonela are steeped in Finnish folklore and atmosphere. His final symphony, filled with majestic beauty, is a favourite for many and closes the concert.
“Such a pleasure hearing and seeing him play… always so exciting to witness the emergence of brilliant new artistic voices”
Nitin Sawhney
