Play ON
Play ON is The Orchestra of Opera North 'in residence' and takes place at a different Yorkshire school each year.
For the past three years, the highly acclaimed Orchestra of Opera North have been working in residence at secondary schools in Kirklees to raise the profile of instrumental music and playing within each school.
Over the last year, pupils from years 9&10 at Salendine Nook High School have been working with composer Richard Taylor and members of the Orchestra of Opera North to create new pieces of music. The pieces were premiered at Huddersfield’s Camel Club on the 8th June for an audience of parents and friends, including the brand new Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Julie Stewart-Turner.
“First class in every way. The students should be proud of their efforts which have led to the most interesting and inspiring performances. Well done to all concerned, keep it up!” An audience member.
A Year 10 participant commented after the performance: “At the end you could say, I helped create that!”
For the first time, this year will see the Orchestra of Opera North in residency at a school in Leeds. Working with a composer and a team of orchestral players, pupils from Corpus Christi Catholic College will be introduced to orchestral music, have their imagination and creativity stimulated, and take part in unique visits, concerts and orchestral rehearsals throughout the year.
