Little London Community Primary School
‘The partnership that we are enjoying with Opera North has contributed significantly to the rise in fortunes in the school – both in terms of academic improvement (the twentieth most improved school in the country over the last three years!) and confidence. When you consider that we speak 32 different languages here and most of our children have English as an additional language, the rapid progress is remarkable. Opera North has opened doors to learning that all our children have been able to access.’
Jill Wood, Headteacher
Opera North and Little London Community Primary School have worked together since 2005 to deliver artistically and educationally rigorous activities that have provided unique learning experiences for the teachers, children and partners themselves.
Regular music and arts activities took place in each class on a weekly basis, with more intense residencies at key points. Some out of school arts activities were also delivered for children and staff.
The project culminated in a whole school performance of The Great Northern Hippo! in Leeds during Summer 2008 Every child and member of staff in the school was involved in creating a part of the performance, from the music and set to the props and animation. This was then performed twice to a packed audience. Each pupil felt a sense of pride and ownership for the product they had made.
